Concert review continued from page 1
The middle set was filled per usual by the awesome Central Illinois Jazz Society House Band. I thought it was one of the best sets of recent months, with Larry Harms on saxophone and Fearless Leaderdom, Randy Emert on bass, Rich Olson filling in for Corey Flannigan on drums, BillyCook on guitar and David Hoffman on piano and cornet. Perhaps as a foil to the traditional jazz of the Devils, the House Band did a heavily be-bop oriented set that also featured vocalist Benny Moten.
The CIJS began selling the Jazz Icons DVD series at this concert also. I own most of these, and they are excellent. Sometimes these kinds of projects are put together quickly without much thought to the quality of the end product. This is not the case with these. They are all of great artists in the prime of their careers. They are highly recommended.
Once again, it was a great evening of jazz.
