Dave Hoffman and Friends
Dave Hoffman and Friends on Sunday at four in the afternoon, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Peoria has inaugurated a new Jazz Vesper service with Dave Hoffman and various friends filling the church with everything from cool to hot jazz in praise of God. Dave doesn’t water anything down, so we hear the best of his art in this service of worship.
Vespers are a very old tradition in the Christian Church. The form is simple with Scripture, Prayers and music … along with a short Homily (sermon). It is a forty minute service, keeping it within the bounds of possibility for even younger children. We hope it will truly become a way to bridge all age groups … worshipping together each week.

The Illinois State University Jazz Ensemble I with special guest Dennis Mackrel, a fabulous world class drummer and educator. ISU’s Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Tom Marko is made up of sixteen to eighteen of the best instrumentalists on campus. They play music ranging from traditional to cutting edge and feature numerous student soloists in the process. Since this performance falls on the same weekend as the annual Illinois State University Jazz Festival, they will be accompanied by their special guest artist Dennis Mackrel http://www.dennismackrelmusic.com/. Mackrel has many credits to his name as a drum set artist, composer, arranger, band leader and more. Some of his most notable achievements include playing drums for the Count Basie Orchestra from 1983 to 1987 under the leadership of Thad Jones, Frank Foster and Mr. Basie himself! Eventually (2010 to 2013) he took on the prestigious role of leader and conductor of this legendary band. Additionally, the band performed and recorded several of his compositions and arrangements over the years including “And That’s That” which will be part of the April 15th set list. Dennis is also very gifted in teaching and encouraging young musicians to pursue their craft with passion and energy. ISU is proud to feature his playing, composing, arranging and instruction this year as part of their jazz festival and especially excited to be able to share it all with Central Illinois Jazz Society!
