Biography
The New Frank Trompeter Quartet eases great jazz through contemporary funk and reggae styles, and also plays Bebop, Hard Bop, Swing Vocals and 1950s lounge blues in their repertoire. The new line-up, pianist Chris Miller, electric bassist John Peterson and drummer Jeremy Davidson, regularly goes out on hard-grooving musical limbs, to the delight of audiences. The group hosts a weekly Happy Hour gig at Marly's Pub (5th & Adams) in Springfield beginning at 6 pm Fridays. New FTG is led by Chicago native Frank Trompeter on saxophones and vocals, who in 2001 was named Best Male Musician in Springfield, IL (ILLINOIS TIMES Best of Springfield reader's poll). On sax, his playing style is a mix the bluesy intensity of Cannonball and funk pioneer Maceo Parker. He has a smooth, classic sound on tenor like Stanley Turrentin, and can also take the sax way up beyond its traditional range--at times mixing in free jazz a la Ornette or Trane. As a vocalist, Frank idolizes both Chicago jazz vocalist Kurt Elling, and the soulful blues singers of the 1940s and 1950s. Sally Weisenburg has complimented him on his singing. The End Times Trio plays freejazz, fully-improvised creative music. The Trio was formed in 2006 after New York freejazz drummer Richard Gilman-Opalsky moved to Springfield, and contacted Frank Trompeter, who had played in freejazz groups and hosted international avant-garde jazz acts previously. The group's first CD "FRACTURE TIME" is out on Fire & Flux Records, and available at CDBaby.com Trompeter will also perform as a comedy lounge singer, singing Good Sinatra and Bad Lounge Music from the 1970s. He is by far the finest saxophonist among all the lounge singers West of the Mississippi River.
