Biography
Semenya earned her degree in Music Education from Knox College; did some graduate study at University of Massachusetts/Amherst where she worked with Horace C. Boyer, Max Roach, and Archie Shepp. Shepp featured her voice and composition on his 1975 recording "There's A Trumpet In My Soul." She was awarded 'Outstanding Jazz Vocalist' in 1988 by the Boston Music Awards; and received the 'Martin Luther King, Jr. Award' for Musical Excellence' in 1990 from the City of Boston and inducted into the 'Steppin� Out' Jazz Hall of Fame in Boston in 2002. Semenya has been performing throughout New England since 1975, and has performed in concerts in France and Costa Rica and has toured from North Dakota to Florida during the Spring of 1991. Semenya moved "home" to Galesburg, Illinois in 2003 to look after her mother. She earned her Masters in Music, focus on Jazz, at Northern Illinois University in 2006; and was also honored with an Alumni Achievement Award at Knox College the same year. She is an active member of the MENC, Galesburg Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, Galesburg Chapter of ALTRUSA, Inc., and Quad-Cities chapter of Just Good Friends. Semenya is currently directing choirs and teaching general music at Lombard Middle School in Galesburg, as well as Jazz Voice at Knox College. She often brings New England musicians to join her in significant performances in the Galesburg area and in the Quad-Cities.
